Job Summary:

Monitor attendance for school-age children and work with school administrators, students, parents, and the community to keep students in school.

Essential Functions of Position:

1. Document all student absences and late arrivals to school and individual classes.

2. Track unexcused and excessive absences for all students in the school district.

3. Make phone calls to student’s homes and parent work places to determine whereabouts of absent students.

4. Visit homes and other areas in the community where truant students are known

to frequent.

5. Compose and mail warning letters to parents and/or guardians of truant students.

6. Act as a law enforcement specialist enforcing the Pennsylvania school

Attendance laws in accordance with Section 1333 of the PA School Code.

7. File truancy charges with the local district justice on students and parents in

accordance with Section 1333 of the PA School Code.

8. Attend truancy hearings at the magistrate’s office.

9. Work closely with juvenile probation officers and case workers to discuss

the needs of the students.


Professional Responsibilities:

1. Maintain professional relationships with agency personnel, school personnel, students, families and outside agencies.

2. Attend conferences and meetings within the Erie County area to obtain new ideas on combating truancy issues at the school.

3. Serve as a committee member on the Erie County Truancy Task Force.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Superior interpersonal skills and ability to develop and maintain relationships on a professional level.

2. Ability to develop a positive rapport with students and families to help “bridge the gap” between chronic absenteeism and being successful in school.

3. Expertise in the attendance laws in accordance with the PA School Code.

4. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

5. Ability to maintain records and other documents efficiently.

Required Education, Experience, and Clearances:

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.

2. Truancy Officer Certification for Pennsylvania a plus.

3. Possess or capable of obtaining acceptable FBI, Child Abuse History, PA State Police, and Driver Clearances.


Physical Demands:

1. Lifting requirement of less than 10lbs on an occasional basis.

2. Ability to operate a motor vehicle to travel within the community.

Pay:

$18-$19 per hour
